causes of neck painEver wondered about the causes of neck pain? It is estimated that 70% of people will experience neck pain at some point in their lives, and half to 85% of those people will have that pain recur within 5 years.  Neck pain can prevent us from doing many day-to-day tasks comfortably or safely, such as typing on a computer or driving a car.

Causes of Neck Pain

The reasons for neck pain can vary greatly, but there are some that are more common, including:

  1. Trauma – Any injury that affects the neck, such as whiplash, can damage the structures and tissues of the neck.
  2. Degeneration – Over time, if issues are not corrected, the discs that separate the vertebra in the neck can begin to thin.
  3. Fibromyalgia – People with fibromyalgia experience widespread pain, with neck pain being one of the most common complaints.
  4. Poor posture – Abnormal posture can cause muscle strain or spasm and unequal pressure on the discs.
  5. Spinal misalignments – Subluxations of the vertebrae of your spine can put pressure on nerves and cause pain, muscle spasms, and reduced range of motion.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Neck Pain

There is a common thread that can be found in each of the neck pain causes above.  A misalignment of the atlas (C1) vertebra, which is the topmost bone in the neck, can be the underlying cause of many sources of neck pain.  Any type of head or neck trauma can easily cause the atlas to misalign.  This misalignment not only can cause pain or discomfort, but it can also disrupt the body’s ability to communicate normally over the nervous system.

The upper cervical chiropractic approach takes a very detailed look at atlas alignment.  Since each individual is so unique, we go to great lengths to understand the exact degree of misalignment in each case so that the appropriate adjustment can be given – it is definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ approach.  Once the atlas misalignment is corrected, the head is able to move normally and be normally supported by the neck.  This can reduce pain, muscle spasms, and nerve pressure to allow the healing process to take place naturally.
