Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting Neck pain is an extremely common condition.  The neck is a complex combination of bones, muscles, and ligaments.  Any of these structures can be strained or injured, leading to pain, stiffness, and discomfort.  One thing to consider is how we are caring for our neck during the hours we are asleep.  The position we choose to sleep in can either help or hinder neck pain.

If you have neck pain, then there is one sleeping position you want to avoid entirely – sleeping on your stomach.  When you lie on your stomach through the night, your neck is forced into a maximally rotated position that can be straining to the structures of your neck.  The best sleeping positions that are easiest on the neck by far are either on your back or on your side.  Choosing a pillow that is designed to support the natural curve in your neck can provide needed support through the night.

Addressing Chronic Neck Pain Naturally

If you are experiencing neck pain then it’s important to have your spine evaluated by an upper cervical chiropractor.  Upper cervical chiropractors are trained to pay specific attention to the way the uppermost vertebrae in the spine are positioned, as those play an important part in the health of the rest of the neck and spine.  Not only can an upper cervical misalignment cause reduced range of motion, pain, and discomfort, it can also cause other health issues as well.

The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae that comprise the upper cervical spine provide a layer of protection for the brainstem.  The brainstem is a critical area of our central nervous system that governs many of our involuntary functions, such as digestion, respiration, and blood pressure.  An upper cervical misalignment can also hinder some of these functions by causing brainstem pressure.  Having these misalignments corrected gently and accurately by an upper cervical chiropractor can be both a lasting solution to neck pain, as well as a way to ensure that your body is functioning at its highest capacity.
