Vertigo, Meniere’s Disease, Meniere’s, Dizzy, DizzinessMeniere’s disease is a vestibular condition that affects the inner ear. Symptoms of Meniere’s disease include vertigo, tinnitus, fullness in the ear, and temporary hearing loss. When a Meniere’s attack is severe enough to cause a person to fall, it is referred to as a drop attack.

While Meniere’s can manifest at any age, the majority of patients suffer their first attack between the ages of 40 and 60. More than 600,000 Americans have Meniere’s and that number increases by over 45,000 annually.

What Causes Meniere’s Disease

For many years, the understanding was that this condition was caused by fluid being retained in the ears. Membranes inside the ear would thus rupture and the symptoms of Meniere’s resulted. However, a study performed by Dr. Burcon revealed a connection, not to an inner ear problem but to neck injuries from whiplash and other trauma that create a lesion that affects the Eustachian tube.

One reason scientists were looking in the wrong place is that it can take about 15 years for the neck injury to create the circumstances for Meniere’s to arise. Because of this, most researchers focused on the ears and not the neck, never making the connection between trauma and Meniere’s. What do these findings mean for relief?

Natural Relief Care for Meniere’s

If the problem began in the neck, that makes it a good place to look for the solution. Neck injuries such as whiplash can result in an upper cervical misalignment. Such a misalignment can create the circumstances that lead to Meniere’s. This means relieving neck injuries, even seemingly minor ones, is important. But what if your injury has already progressed?

By reversing the original injury through a gentle upper cervical correction, many are finding some relief from the symptoms of Meniere’s. At Upper Cervical Chiropractic of San Diego, we use the Blair technique to deliver just such a correction.
